What is a licensed massage therapist?

A licensed massage therapist is a trained healthcare professional who specializes in the art and science of therapeutic touch. Massage therapy is a holistic approach to healing that involves the manipulation of soft tissues to relieve pain, reduce stress, and promote overall health and wellness.

Our The Sports Clinic massage therapists work with patients of all ages and backgrounds, from athletes and weekend warriors to office workers and seniors. They help patients manage a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, musculoskeletal disorders, stress and anxiety, and post-injury or post-surgical recovery.

Massage therapists use various techniques to address your needs, including:

  • Swedish massage: A popular type of massage therapy, Swedish massage involves long, gliding strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, and vibration to promote relaxation and improve circulation.
  • Deep tissue massage: This type of massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue with slow, deep strokes and friction across the muscle grain to break up adhesions, knots, and scar tissue.
  • Myofascial release: A technique that uses sustained pressure and gentle stretching to soften and lengthen the fascia, which helps improve flexibility and range of motion, as well as alleviate pain and discomfort caused by tightness or restrictions in the fascial system.
  • Trigger point therapy: This therapy targets specific points in muscles called “trigger points,” which are tight knots that can cause pain or discomfort, both at the site and in referred areas. Therapists apply targeted pressure to these points, often using their fingers, knuckles, or elbows, to release tension and alleviate pain.

They also may incorporate complementary techniques such as aromatherapy, hot stone therapy, or stretching and range of motion exercises.

In addition to providing hands-on therapy, licensed massage therapists work closely with you to develop personalized treatment plans that address your unique needs and goals.

Our The Sports Clinic massage therapists may also provide guidance on lifestyle changes, such as exercise, nutrition, and stress management, to support the healing process and promote long-term health and wellness.

Our licensed massage therapists are trained professionals who specialize in the art and science of therapeutic touch. We work with patients of all ages and backgrounds to manage various conditions and promote overall health and wellness through a holistic approach to healing!

What does a massage therapist do?

Our therapists will typically ask about the patient’s health history and any current symptoms or concerns during a massage therapy session. They will then develop a personalized treatment plan based on the patient’s needs and preferences. They may use various techniques to address specific areas of the body.

What is evidence-based chiropractic care?

Evidence-based chiropractic care combines the best available scientific research, clinical expertise, and patient preferences. Chiropractors use proven assessment and treatment methods to manage musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and joint injuries. Care is guided by clinical guidelines, not outdated or unproven theories.

Are chiropractors considered musculoskeletal (MSK) experts?

Yes. Chiropractors are highly trained in diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal conditions. Their education focuses extensively on anatomy, biomechanics, neurology, and orthopedic assessment, making them experts in identifying the source of pain and dysfunction in muscles, joints, and nerves.

How is chiropractic care similar to physiotherapy?

Chiropractors and physiotherapists both treat musculoskeletal injuries using evidence-based approaches. They assess movement, diagnose physical conditions, and use treatments like manual therapy, exercise prescription, and patient education. In many cases, the treatments provided by both professions overlap significantly.

Do chiropractors only perform spinal adjustments?

No. While spinal manipulation is one tool, chiropractors use a wide range of treatments including soft tissue therapy, joint mobilizations, exercise rehabilitation, education, and lifestyle advice. Care is tailored to the patient’s specific condition and goals.

Is chiropractic care supported by scientific research?

Yes. There is strong evidence supporting chiropractic care for conditions like low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Clinical guidelines often recommend spinal manipulation, exercise, and manual therapy—treatments commonly used by chiropractors.

Can chiropractors diagnose injuries?

Yes. Chiropractors are trained to perform thorough physical exams, take medical histories, and diagnose musculoskeletal conditions. They can also identify when a condition requires referral to a medical specialist or imaging.

What conditions do chiropractors commonly treat?

Chiropractors commonly treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder injuries, sports injuries, and joint problems. They also help with posture-related issues and workplace injuries.

Do chiropractors provide exercise programs?

Yes. Exercise rehabilitation is a key part of evidence-based chiropractic care. Chiropractors design personalized exercise programs to improve strength, mobility, and long-term recovery.

What is the difference between spinal manipulation and mobilization?

Spinal manipulation involves a quick, controlled movement to a joint, while mobilization uses slower, gentler movements within the joint’s range. Both Physiotherapists and Chiropractors choose the technique based on the patient’s comfort and condition.

Is acupuncture part of chiropractic care?

Yes. Chiropractors at TSC are trained in acupuncture and use it to manage pain, reduce muscle tension, and promote healing. It is often integrated with other therapies for better outcomes.

What is dry needling and do chiropractors use it?

Dry needling involves inserting thin needles into tight muscle bands (trigger points) to relieve pain and improve function. Chiropractors at TSC are certified in dry needling and use it as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes. Chiropractic care is considered safe when performed by a licensed professional. Techniques are adapted to the patient’s condition, age, and health status to minimize risk.

Do chiropractors treat more than just the spine?

Absolutely. Chiropractors treat all joints and muscles in the body, including shoulders, knees, hips, elbows, and ankles. Their focus is on overall movement and function, not just the spine.

Can my physiotherapist diagnose me?

The definition of diagnosis means to identify or determine the cause or nature of a disease, disorder, or other medical condition. The process of diagnosis typically involves collecting information about a patient’s symptoms, medical history, and physical examination results. This information is then used to form a diagnosis, which is a medical opinion or conclusion about the nature of the condition.

During your initial session at The Sports Clinic, our physiotherapist will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a detailed history and comprehensive physical examination. This assessment helps determine the severity of your injury or illness, pinpoint the source of your symptoms, and identify contributing factors.

The goal of Physiotherapy is to help you find relief and/or recover from your condition. Although the diagnosis is essential to this process, it is not the main focus of a Physiotherapy visit. For example, the diagnosis may point to the location of your symptoms. Still, it does not account for all the factors affecting it, nor does it account for how it is affecting the rest of your body. Our therapists look at the whole person to help you resolve all of your issues, not just the diagnosis.

In addition, physiotherapists regularly collaborate with physicians to confirm or explore potential contradictions to a diagnosis, ensuring the accuracy of your diagnosis and the appropriateness of your treatment plan.

You can trust The Sports Clinic to guide you toward improved health and well-being. Our dedicated team of experts and our commitment to your personalized care will help you get the results you deserve!

When will I start to feel better?

At The Sports Clinic, we understand that one of the most common questions we receive from patients is, “When will I start to feel better?” While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, we want to ensure that you understand the Physiotherapy process and what you can expect.

Physiotherapy is a comprehensive and personalized process that takes time to achieve optimal results. The timeline for recovery and pain relief varies depending on the individual, the severity of the condition, and other factors such as age and overall health.

Our expert physiotherapists work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals. We use various techniques, exercises, and modalities to relieve pain, restore function, and prevent future injury or pain.

It is important to understand that Physiotherapy is not a quick fix but a process that takes time and effort. You may start to feel some improvement in your symptoms after a few sessions, but it may take weeks or even months to achieve optimal results.

Our holistic approach means considering not just your physical health but also your emotional and mental well-being. We understand that Physiotherapy can be a challenging physical and emotional process, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment plan or timeline for recovery, please do not hesitate to discuss them with our physiotherapists. We are here to help you achieve optimal health and wellness!

Do treatments hurt?

Physiotherapy can be a powerful tool to alleviate pain and discomfort. Our The Sports Clinic therapists are dedicated to helping you understand what “normal” pain is and what isn’t. In some cases, a physiotherapist’s exercises or actions may trigger a temporary pain response to facilitate your overall improvement.

It is important to understand that weakened or recuperating muscles may cause momentary discomfort when you begin exercising them. For some people, years of avoiding movement or recent surgery can cause pain when restoring range of motion. It may sound counterintuitive, but in some cases, experiencing this type of pain can reduce overall pain levels and prevent more severe pain.

Although we know that sometimes it is “normal” to have pain, our physiotherapists will never intentionally inflict pain on you. In addition, we will educate you about when pain is acceptable (necessary) for your recovery and when it should be avoided.

You can also count on our The Sports Clinic therapists to do everything possible to minimize your discomfort and prevent increased pain during your Physiotherapy treatments. Communication is critical, and we encourage you to speak openly with our therapists to reduce any discomfort you may feel.

Ultimately, our goal is to help you find lasting pain relief to get back to your typical routines as soon as possible. We will work with you every step to prepare you for any discomfort you may experience and ensure that your Physiotherapy experience is as comfortable and effective as possible.

How is my progress tracked?

Our physiotherapists use a variety of tools to track your progress, including regular assessments, measurements, and evaluations. We track changes in your range of motion, strength, and function to ensure that you are making progress toward your goals.

It is a journey towards better health and well-being, and we want to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

Physiotherapy takes into account not just your current condition but also your entire well-being, including your physical, emotional, and mental health. Our expert physiotherapists work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals.

Physiotherapy is not just about treating the symptoms of your condition but also addressing the root causes of your pain or discomfort. This can take time and effort to identify and treat effectively.

Our expert physiotherapists use a comprehensive and holistic approach to ensure that older adults receive the best possible care. We take into account not just your physical health but also your emotional and mental well-being.

Physiotherapy for older adults may differ in a few ways from Physiotherapy for younger adults. Older adults may have a higher risk of falls, decreased mobility, and reduced balance. Our physiotherapists will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to prevent falls, improve mobility, and enhance balance.

We may also use specialized equipment or techniques to ensure your safety and comfort during treatment. Our physiotherapists understand that older adults may have different goals for treatment than younger adults, and we will work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Can I continue seeing a therapist even when I feel better?

At The Sports Clinic, we understand that Physiotherapy is not just about treating the symptoms of your condition but also preventing future injury or pain. This is why we encourage our patients to continue seeing a physiotherapist even when they start to feel better.

While you may feel significant improvement in your symptoms and overall function, it is important to understand that Physiotherapy is a comprehensive and ongoing process. Continuing to see a physiotherapist can help you maintain your progress and prevent future injury or pain.

Our expert physiotherapists will work with you to develop a personalized maintenance plan that addresses your unique needs and goals. This may include ongoing exercises, stretches, or lifestyle modifications to help you maintain optimal function and prevent injury or pain.

After you have finished your therapy sessions, you can continue to see our physiotherapist in several different ways, for example:

  • Your therapist will see your review and progress in your at-home therapy program.
  • You can schedule a re-evaluation after a month to ensure you are still doing well and modify your home program as needed.
  • You can arrange to see your therapist at regular intervals (i.e., every six months) for a consultation to assess your progress, ensure you are not regressing, and deal with anything new that may have started.

We can also arrange to meet you at your gym to work with you on determining what equipment and exercises would benefit your continued recovery.

If you have any questions or concerns about continuing Physiotherapy even when you start to feel better, please do not hesitate to discuss them with our physiotherapists.
