Find Movement Again with Custom Braces and Orthoses!
Has persistent pain or a recent orthopedic injury limited your mobility? A custom brace or orthosis from The Sports Clinic can provide extra support to your joints as you heal.
An orthosis is a medical device that supports and protects a particular area of your body. It’s an umbrella term that includes braces (such as knee braces) and splints (such as hand splints).
While you can purchase orthotic devices off the shelf, a custom-designed orthosis will provide more comfort and improve your overall function, as it will better fit with your unique biomechanics.

What Does an Orthotic Device Do?
The primary purpose of an orthosis is to align an impaired joint into a more functional position. This protects the joint, offering additional support and alleviating pressure.
Perhaps the most common use of an orthosis is after orthopedic surgery or injury. The device helps reduce pain as the affected joint heals. When paired with physical therapy techniques such as manual therapy or therapeutic exercise, an orthosis can serve an important role in rehabilitation.
Certain conditions can also benefit from bracing and orthoses, including cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. In these cases, the device helps reduce the effect of muscle stiffness.
The Process of Crafting a Customized Orthosis
Our certified prosthetist/orthotist (CPO) will begin with a comprehensive assessment in which we evaluate your symptoms and condition and discuss your specific goals. We’ll also work with other members of your care team to ensure we meet all of your needs.
Next, we’ll take careful measurements so that the device will fit your unique body and goals. Some orthoses immobilize a joint; others allow for more mobility. We’ll create something that suits your needs.
When your device is ready, we’ll bring you in for a fitting, providing information on using your device correctly.
A customized orthosis can help reduce pain and improve mobility. Schedule an appointment at The Sports Clinic’s Oakville and Carlisle, ON clinic to get started with an orthosis of your own!
