A Compassionate Approach to Addressing Latching Issues
For many mothers, dealing with breastfeeding struggles can be an emotionally fraught experience. It’s important to remember that these struggles are not your fault–and that you have options for helping your child get the nutrients they need.
There’s usually an underlying reason why your child can’t latch onto your breast, and these causes often stem from issues in the musculoskeletal system, such as an overly tight jaw. Our physiotherapists will help uncover any impairments that might make it hard for your child to nurse. Then, we’ll create a treatment plan to address those impairments.
If your child struggles with breastfeeding, The Sports Clinic wants to help! Schedule an appointment today to get started.
What Causes Latching Issues in Infants?
While many factors can cause latching difficulties, here are some of the ones that we can help address:
- Torticollis: Torticollis occurs when a baby tends to tilt their head to one side. This preferred positioning can interfere with breastfeeding.
- Flat Head Syndrome: Flat head syndrome occurs when a child develops a flat spot on their head, often due to torticollis.
- Tongue-Ties: Tongue-ties occur when a thick band of tissue interferes with the tongue’s range of motion, affecting your child’s latching ability.
- Jaw Tightness: If your child has restricted jaw muscles, it will be harder for them to latch on to your breast.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
We know how frustrating latching difficulties can be. Uncovering a specific cause often helps alleviate some of those concerns, as it’s the first step in addressing the problem!
That’s why we’ll always begin with a comprehensive assessment of your child’s neck and facial muscles. We’ll also work closely with your pediatrician or other care team members to fully understand your child’s needs.
From there, we’ll develop a comprehensive, holistic care plan to address these causes directly. While every plan is different, here are some of the techniques we might use:
- Manual Therapy: These gentle, hands-on techniques can help relax your child’s muscles and improve their jaw’s mobility and range of motion.
- Oral Motor Exercises: We can help strengthen your child’s jaw, mouth, and tongue muscles, giving them the strength and coordination to latch and suckle more easily.
- Advice on Positioning: Maining the proper position while you breastfeed is crucial! We’ll help identify the best alignment and positioning for your child.
The team at The Sports Clinic understands your breastfeeding difficulties–and we’ll work hard to help you find a solution!
